The collections consists primarily of architectural drawings, plans and renderings, photographs, slides, correspondence, research files, and papers related to architecutral work by Johnson for projects chiefly in Albemarle County, Va. Among the projects are Monticello, various buildings at the University of Virginia, and numerous private residences which he designed or restored. Major projects represented include Albemarle County Courthouse, Belle Grove, Burning Daylight Farm, Cherry Hill Farm, Christ Church (Glendower), Cismont Manor Farm, Cocke's Mill House, Crozet Library, Derwent, Fairfax Hall, Glen Echo, Glendower, Horseshoe Farm, Mirador, Monticello, Monticola, Mount Ida, Piedmont Virginia Community College, Plain Dealing, Shadwell, Sherwood Hill, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Tallwood, Virginia National Bank, White Hall Farm, William Peters House and projects at the University of Virginia including the Rotunda Esplanade, Madison Hall and the Miller Center. The collection also includes personal papers pertaining to society memberships, hobbies, and naval service.
